As
part of NBW, MindSet has organized the Biotech Brain Game for provincial,
national or international participation. This year 15 questions related to biomedical engineering will be sent
out to high school students registered for the program. In addition to Manitoba students
involved in SABC, this will include students from Japan, Australia and Germany
who are involved in the BioInnovations Student Conference.Students from Ho Yu Primary School and
College will represent Hong Kong. In addition, high schools in Worthington and St. Paul,
Minnesota have been invited to participate.
Students
can enter as individuals or in teams of two. Winners for each category will be selected
based on the number of questions they answer correctly. If there is a tie inthe number of correct responses, the
winning entry will be selected based on the team that returned their answers
first.
Categories
for the contest include a winner from each of the SABC programs in Manitoba, an
overall Manitoba winner as well as an overall winner from all the students including
those from Hong Kong, Japan, Australia and Germany, each of which will have a
country winner.
Post-graduate
students from the Electrical Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering,
University of Manitoba are creating this year’s questions. The questions should deal with introductory
knowledge to biomedical engineering reflecting the importance of physics.Last year’s questions surveyed students’
knowledge of H1N1 with students from Swan River Regional Secondary School emerging
as the winners of the Manitoba and overall categories.
BioOlympics, St. Boniface Research Centre, Sept. 22, 2010
The
BioOlympics are organized and supported by MindSet and the Life Sciences Association
of Manitoba to introduce bioscience and biotechnology to students in the middle
years.Students from 10 schools
will have a half day to try hands-on activities, related to these areas in the
spirit of friendly competition.Among
the activities arelaser surgery,
endoscopy bad DNA extraction.St.
Boniface Research Centre will again host the event.
Biomedical Engineering Workshop, Faculty of Engineering, University
of Manitoba, Sept. 24, 2010
Biomedical
engineering, including nanotechnology applications, is the theme for MindSet’s
involvement in NBW,In partnership
with the Biomedical Engineering Group of the Faculty of Education at the
University of Manitoba, MindSet has organized a one day workshop for students
and teachers to learn more about this extremely important area of scientific
development.
Approximately
80 students and teachersfrom
12 schools are currently registered for the workshops which will be comprised
of up to 10 activities, created by the staff and students of the Faculty of
Engineering.
MindSet
supports the involvement of students from Northern Manitoba in the
BioInnovations Student Conference, organized by Pembina Trails School
Division.Students from Winnipeg
and rural Manitoba are joined by students from Germany, Japan and Australia for
a week of biotechnology-related activities in some of Manitoba’s world class
research and academic centres.
Twenty-first
Century Leadership Skills, like peer coaching, is not about technology. The emphasis
of the two day workshop is about discussing the current needs of the workplace,
marketplace and the global implications of these demands. In partnership with
the Park West School Division, MindSet is offering the workshop Oct. 6-7 in
Russell, Manitoba
for school leaders in the Western part of the province
MindSet
is in its fifth year promoting the use of peer coaching as a school or
division-wide strategy
to help teachers better integrate technology into their instruction. Peer coaching differs
from most other strategies because it is based on a collegial decision-making model
rather than an expert model.MindSet will participate in the Frontier School Division’s
peer coaching workshops beginning, the week of Nov. 15. The workshop is mostly
about coaching and much less about technology.
